It was found on October 13, 1885, and opened its doors for the first time in October 1888 for 84 students. Till the late 1940s, the university became to be known as a regionally recognized technological university.
Gradually, the university started shifting its focus on advanced technological and scientific research. Georgia Institute of Technology has emerged as a national leader in managing the global shift from an industrial economy to an information economy. Being a part of the University System of Georgia, it has satellite campuses in Savannah, Georgia, Metz, France, Athlone, Ireland, Shenzen, China, and Singapore.

In terms of infrastructure, this university has a big campus covered over an area of 400-acre situated in the central part of Atlanta, Georgia. It also has 43 sports clubs. The university's Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC) has been recognized by Forbes magazine as one of the 12 business incubators 'changing the world'.
The ATDC was found in 1980 and is known to be the oldest technology incubator in the U.S. with more than $2 billion raised by 150 graduates. This university is constantly rated as a top-level university in the U.S. for the graduation of underrepresented minorities in engineering, physical sciences, architecture, and planning.
It also has over 60 chartered student organizations that explore religious, racial, sexual, and ethnic identity, thus allowing students to celebrate, strengthen and share their part of the strong cultural melting point which flourishes in the community.
