This university comprises six colleges and 28 schools which place emphasis on different areas of studies such as business, computing, design, engineering, liberal arts, and sciences. This university is one of the South's largest industrial and engineering research agencies.

It also plays a crucial part in the Georgia Research Alliance, which is a major part of Georgia State's economic development strategy. This research institute along with diverse academic schools, departments, and over 100 interdisciplinary research units conducts research for industry and government. In terms of infrastructure, this university has a big campus covered over an area of 400-acre situated in the central part of Atlanta, Georgia. It also has 43 sports clubs. The university's Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC) has been recognized by Forbes magazine as one of the 12 business incubators 'changing the world'.

The ATDC was found in 1980 and is known to be the oldest technology incubator in the U.S. with more than $2 billion raised by 150 graduates. This university is constantly rated as a top-level university in the U.S. for the graduation of underrepresented minorities in engineering, physical sciences, architecture, and planning.

It also has over 60 chartered student organizations that explore religious, racial, sexual, and ethnic identity, thus allowing students to celebrate, strengthen and share their part of the strong cultural melting point which flourishes in the community.
